Distinguished Alumni to be Honored at Alumni Awards Night

On Saturday, May 6, we will honor two men as Distinguished Alumni because of their success since graduating from Saint Ignatius High School and their continued dedication to their Alma Mater. The award honors alumni who have distinguished themselves through outstanding achievements in their chosen field or profession, use their talents and skills for those in need, consistent with the theme, “Men for Others” and who serve as a positive role models for Saint Ignatius High School students through consistent application of high moral and ethical standards and service to the school.

This year, we are proud to honor Dr. Neil P. Smith ’76 and Michael H. Thaman ’82.

Neil Smith '76Besides raising a family, running an urgent care in Rocky River and being president of Fairview Hospital, last year Smith developed an after-school “Medical Mystery Tour” course for Saint Ignatius and Magnificat students. Gradually discovering clues about a fictional patient, teams compete against each other to find the correct diagnosis. Smith designed the course for students like himself who may not love biology or chemistry but thrive on the challenge of seeking a diagnosis that can mean the difference between life and death.

_AF52324Thaman is passionate about creating opportunities for young people to broaden their world through employment, education, and mentoring. In addition to being President and CEO of Owens Corning, a leader in the glass fiber industry, he is on the board at St. John’s Jesuit High School in Toledo, Ohio, where he has two alumni sons and four current students. He and his wife have also supported the Saint Ignatius initiative to provide Chromebooks for students who can’t afford a laptop. Thaman is currently working with his former classmate and President of Saint Ignatius Fr. Ray Guiao, S.J. ’82 to support faculty development that strengthens the school’s Ignatian identity.
